Water Lily House - Paragraph 84 (Formerly Paragraph 80)

AR Design Studio are in the process of submitting planning for a ‘Paragraph 84’ (formerly Paragraph 79, Paragraph 55, and Paragraph 80) scheme, The Floating House. The private client came to AR Design Studio with a reservoir site in Alresford.

Designed by AR Design Studio an award-winning RIBA certified contemporary architectural practice, based in Winchester, Hampshire, specialising in elegant modern new homes, extensions, renovations and multi-plot developments.

AR Design Studio secure first ever Paragraph 84 (formerly Paragraph 80) approval in the Winchester District on The Water Lily House in September 2022.

The private client came to AR Design Studio with a reservoir site in Alresford. Built to provide water to a neighboring salad farm, the reservoir was never used and has sat stagnant for years.

The brief was for a contemporary house for the Structural Engineer client and his family. Considering the rural context, the development falls under the special circumstances of ‘Paragraph 80’, requiring isolated development within the countryside to be of ‘exceptional quality or of an innovative nature of design.’

The concept leans heavily on a symbiotic relationship between the building and site. This has been distilled within the design process, and from this the form of the water lily emerged, the plant itself playing an important role in enhancing the ecosystems of pond life.

Water Lily House is unique in its design, providing an innovative dwelling in an otherwise underutilised site.
